we got to take a tour of the Winchester Mystery house. It is a very cool house. there are roughly 160 rooms, including 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms, 47 fire places, 17 chimneys, 10,000 window panes, 3 elevators, a hot water shower(which was amazing in 1900) and 13 bathrooms.
She was the daughter-in-law to the man who invented the Winchester repeater rifle. She was widowed around age 40. She went to a medium to ask why she had all this bad luck (because her husband and daughter died suddenly) and the gentleman told her that it was because the spirits who died because of the WInchester rifle were haunting her and in order to keep the spirits happy she needed to build a house and never finish it. so that is what she did. she kept building onto her house and it is crazy with stairs that go to the ceiling. 13 of everything because that is her lucky number. doors that open to the outside. spiderweb design everywhere.
Her will was quite interesting. It stated that all her furniture would first go to her niece and then to anonymous auction. her money was to given to the servants(great pension plan back in the day) and partially to the Tuberculous fund at, what is now, the Yale Medical Center. she died in 1922 at age 82 of old age and her house is still unfinished. once you get inside you have ABSOLUTELY no idea where you are going or how to get out.
my favorite part was all the stained glass windows. she had some of the most beautiful stained glass windows i have ever seen made by Tiffany & co. i could not believe how many windows were throughout the house.
